When bacteria are introduced into the system, it consumes hydrogen and uses it as an energy source to convert carbon dioxide in the air into different types of molecules. This process is similar to photosynthesis, but much more efficient. The system is capable of eliminating 180 grams of carbon dioxide from 230,000 liters of air per kilowatt hour of energy used.
Ultimately, the researchers' goal is to use this bacterial transformation method to turn carbon dioxide into a usable bioplastic. On Earth, this means that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is reduced, thereby mitigating global warming; on Mars, this means using building materials that are rich in carbon dioxide to produce building materials in situ.
