As brewing flavors become more homogenous, beer differentiation and sales battles ultimately rely on packaging to help. Tsingtao standard LOGO, Yanjing 100% switch to metal aluminum foil, snowflake bottle unified packaging color, obviously beer manufacturers are using labels to refresh consumer awareness of the brand, and feel product innovation through packaging.
Subject to strict flavor requirements, it will take time for beer liquid packaging to switch to plastic bottles, and traditional glass bottles still dominate. Because glass lacks the flexibility of PET bottles in bottle shapes, bottle labels have long been limited to paper cold labeling. In addition to changes in printed patterns and cut label shapes, the substrate and labeling process are relatively single.
Shrink Label and Transparent Adhesive (APL) have stood on the beer shelf, the new face is very eye-catching, bringing unprecedented visual impact. The focus here is on shrink film labels. Shrink film labels include Shrink Sleeve and Wrap Around. They are widely used in the labeling of various non-alcoholic beverage containers and become the standard PET bottle labeling form. The thickness of the film is 40-50μm, and the substrate is determined by the labeling performance of the label on the shrinking machine. The commonly used shrinking films are PVC, PETG, OPS and OPP. PVC has a high shrinkage rate (40% ~ 60%), good tensile strength and low cost, suitable for multi-pack combination packaging.
The labeling of PVC on PET bottles is due to the close relative density of the materials, and it is not easy to split during recycling. This problem does not exist in the use of glass bottles. A shrink film sleeve label of Anhui China Resources Beer uses PVC substrates. PETG shrinkage is as high as 78%, but its application is hindered by high prices. OPS is a unidirectional film with a shrinkage rate of 65%. It has both environmental protection and economic advantages, and has good application prospects.
OPP is a two-way film, OPP shrinkage is low (20%), suitable for approximately cylindrical containers with low shrinkage requirements. OPS and OPP are suitable for shrink-wrap labels. Le Cordon Bleu ’s new curve glass bottles use high shrinkage OPS substrates and solvent-based adhesive labels.
There are two methods for printing shrink film labels: gravure and flexo roll printing. Since plastic films are easy to stretch or shrink due to heat, the machine tension and heat should be accurately controlled during printing. For shrink sleeve label printing, a sealing machine is additionally needed to fold the sheet film into a tube shape, seal the overlapping parts to form a seam, then flatten the tube film and wind it up. Sealing parts are generally not printed so as not to affect the adhesion fastness when labeling.
There are solvent-based inks, water-based inks and UV inks for shrink film printing inks. The selection of inks should combine the coefficient of friction (COF), shrinkage, adhesion and residual indicators. COF determines the sliding efficiency of the label on the surface of the container; the shrinkage characteristics of the ink are matched to the film. Higher film shrinkage requires ink shrinkage of 60% to 70% and lower 10% to 20%; solvent-based inks generally have excellent adhesion For ink; ink guarantees rapid drying under low heat to avoid migration of residual chemicals to the surface of the printed matter.
Shrink sleeve labels need special labeling equipment to cover the printed sleeve labels on the container. The shrink film labeling machine opens the cylindrical sleeve label, then cuts the shaped sleeve onto the container, and uses the steam, infrared or hot air channels to adsorb the sleeve label on the surface of the container. Conventional cold glue labeling machine can be used for shrinking surrounding label. OPP surrounding label has low shrinkage rate. Hot-melt adhesive is more suitable for labeling. Solvent-based adhesive will cause film wrinkle. Hot air is better than steam heating for shrinkage.
The cost per unit area of shrink film is equivalent to that of label coated paper, but the overall price of a single bottle is slightly higher than the paper label due to the relatively large area of the bottle. But the new heat-shrinkable beer label gives product innovation and influence, and consumers are willing to pay more for its added value.
