STMicroelectronics, a chip manufacturer in Geneva, Switzerland, announced that they have developed the XRAG2 chip for EPC UHF Class 1 Gen 2 RFID tags. They also announced that they will be able to produce samples that can be applied in the next few weeks. By December, the expected output is 100,000, and the cost for each is $0.07. Once XRAG2 reaches full operation, the company is rumored to plan to ship millions of chips every quarter. The product can be unprocessed wafers or already filled (suitable for metal pads to be placed on the antenna) and segmented or scratched. According to STMicroelectronics, the XRAG2 can perform all functions and features of the Gen 2 protocol (including intensive reader mode operation, password protection, and destroy commands). However, the complexity of the Gen 2 chip is four times that of Gen 1, and due to a new and unique manufacturing process, its price is similar to that of the Gen 1 chip. The company also stated that the XRAG2 has 432 bits of storage space, data can be maintained for 40 years, and can be erased and written 10,000 times.
