3D printed fractal geometry perfectly shows the beauty of mathematics

Undoubtedly, I was not interested in mathematics during my school days. I really don't want to see the various numbers that go around. Although I have never failed in math classes in all grades, I still have to admit that I never missed mathematics from the moment I graduated. Then again, not everyone has the same feelings. Mathematics can be so fascinating to others, especially when it comes to fractals in geometric shapes.

In general, fractals are curves or geometries composed of parts with the same statistical properties. They exist in man-made configurations and objects, and also mysteriously exist in nature. For Jérémie Brunet, fractals have always been so fascinating.

"When I was a teenager in the 1980s, the fractal attracted me deeply." Brunet told 3DPrint.com, "My father gave me a book called "Fractal Beauty" long ago, and I still have a collection. I used to program and build fractals on old computers, and I also painted them by hand. About five years ago, a new generation of 3D fractals appeared in a collaborative project on the onfractalforums.com website, so I was unable to extricate myself."

That day, Brunet stumbled upon Shapeways. Soon, the fact that he had to "give these eccentric mathematical objects to entities" was obvious.

“I hope to break the limitations of fractal art, and 3D printing technology is a perfect technology to achieve this goal,” explains Brunet. “For me, they are a good interpretation of the beauty of nature, in the universe. Fine guidelines and the complexity derived from simple rules and basic elements. Today, limited by the excessive detail requirements of fractal definitions, there are still many difficulties in making 3D printed fractals. But I am still keen to persevere And extending the definition of 3D fractals."

Currently, Brunet has about a hundred different fractals for sale at Shapeways shop, some for less than $10 and some for hundreds of dollars. From large plastic print products to small pieces of jewellery made of gold, silver and copper. Brunet has a strong trust in Shapeways and has not chosen to print it on a FFF-based desktop printer, simply because these machines don't give him the intricate details he needs.

“I want to try and be free to mix colors and materials as much as possible,” Brunet told us. “I firmly believe that one day, I can buy a metal desktop 3D printer that is both cheap and has a high resolution. By that time, I was very May invest."

For a single fractal design, they need a lot of hard work and time. The workflow is complex, including stereo pixel heap output from Mandelbulb3D, a free fractal generation software. In a process called the "traveling block" algorithm, these things form a triangular mesh structure, which is then post-processed and refined in Meshlab. Recently Brunet started using another package called Incendia EX, which provides a special feature: direct output of STL files.

Brunet also told us that while selling a lot of fractals on Shapeways, he spent more than he earned to buy fractals. He hopes to break this situation this year or next, even if it is one day. In any case, 3D printing fractals have brought him a lot of attention.

“Recently, one of the sculptures I made was exhibited at the Brown Symposium at Southwestern University in Texas. It was part of a 3D printing art exhibition called What Things May Come. Even though it was just a hobby, my The next big-scale plan is to participate in the construction of a heavyweight 3D printed fractal temple for the Burning Man Festival in Nevada, preferably in 2017. Stay tuned!"

Even though I am not interested in mathematics like Brunet, I really appreciate the designs that he created. I might end up buying a few of his incredible fractals. What do you think of the fractal of Brunet? Have you purchased them yourself? Discuss the discussion on the 3D Printed Fractals forum on the 3DPB.com website.
