On June 3, 2016, 3D printing startup Metamason announced the completion of a total of $3 million in seed round financing. The round was funded by 3P Equity Partners and Tsing Capital Ventures, a privately-owned private equity firm from San Jose, Calif., which claims to be the most important venture capital firm in China's cleantech sector. According to the company, Qingyun Venture Capital is a subsidiary of Tsinghua Holdings. This round of participation also includes some personal angel investors.
It is reported that Metamason mainly uses 3D technology to create personalized 3D printing medical equipment. Currently, they are working on custom CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) masks for sleep apnea patients through 3D scanning, smart geometry and 3D printing, and a technique they call Scan·Fit·Print. Metamason's main products include the Respere CPAP mask and the Respere free-form CPAP adapter for those with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
“We are very pleased to be able to reach this milestone that is important to the company.†The founder and CEO of Metamason said: “Our investors believe that Metamason will be a disruptive in the $4 billion global sleep apnea market. Positive strength."
According to Cliff Sarkin, the company's COO/CFO and co-founder, Metamason will use the seed investment to obtain FDA approval and conduct preliminary clinical trials of its patent-pending 3D printed Respere CPAP mask. According to Tiangong, OSA is a chronic respiratory disease that affects 1/4 of men and 1/9 of women in the United States. If left untreated, it can disrupt family relationships, cause depression and chronic fatigue, and can lead to diabetes and dangerous heart disease. Although the current treatment of OSA with CPAP has proven to be the most effective long-term treatment, it has become one of the most abandoned medical treatments due to uncomfortable and aesthetic reasons.
“Some of the people we know (including some members of our team) have OSA and are undergoing CPAP treatment, so it quickly became a good opportunity, we added 3D scans and 3D through parametric design. Printing can make a completely customized product," Karpas said. “Although CPAP treatment has proven to be effective, more than half of patients have withdrawn from this treatment because of discomfort caused by unsuitable masks.â€
It is reported that the company's Scan·Fit·Print technology integrates 3D body scanning, patented algorithm design and on-demand 3D printing to create a CPAP mask that comfortably fits the facial features of each patient. Each Respere product is printed on demand using soft, soft medical grade silicone rubber 3D.
In March of this year, the company participated in the final competition of the SXSW Interactive 3DIY Innovation Award as one of the five finalists, and thus won a series of positive reports, and was named by the reason.com as "the six that make the world a better place." One of the cool innovations.
Metamason also plans to hold a crowdfunding campaign in the second half of 2016 and launch a marketing campaign in early 2017, while the Respere 3D print mask is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2017.
