Vienna SMS Machinery recently supplied its 70th polystyrene-foaming equipment to Italy. A plastics production plant in Italy uses a polystyrene-foamed film for the production of thermoformed food trays on a twin-tank foam extrusion machine. In SMS, people are working to grab more market share in food packaging. In addition to extrusion equipment, SMS also offers a variety of special equipment for the production of laminated plastics, films or thermoformed parts.
The Italian plastics factory produces 1.2-6 mm thick polystyrene foam on this equipment, with a mass of 65 kg per cubic meter. The foam film equipment has a total production capacity of 480 kg per hour. Because the SMS solution has two extrusion heads in a two-stage series: in a primary extrusion head named "Contracool", polystyrene and related additives are weighed in a five-feedstock metering system. The above mixture is first plasticized and blended, and then a high-pressure metering pump with three spray heads injects gas into the plastic melt, and the gasified melt is driven into the "Hydrocool" through a sieve-like exchanger and a mixing tube. In a liquid-cooled" secondary extrusion head, the melt enters the melt in the extrusion head and the measurement is readjusted and cooled first.
When the maximum temperature was 110°C, the melt was ejected through a circular nozzle with a diameter of 135 mm and expanded in the form of a foam film. The film was then slid over an internal cold precision pressure rod and an air cooling ring under the air. As a result, the shrinkage of the foam film is precisely controlled and shaped. A longitudinal cutter mounted on the squeezing bar cuts the ring-shaped film into two 90-mm-wide strips of film, which are then rolled into a tray and placed in the storage.
