Inventory: New technology of global hot spot printing

The printing industry can stand up to this day for its own reasons. Almost every technological innovation or revolution can bring the printing industry to a new level and arouse people's unlimited reverie. In recent years, digital technology has become a hot topic in the printing industry, and computer companies like Hewlett-Packard are also participating in the printing market with their energetic inkjet web presses. Today, printing and publishing companies around the world have gradually formed three camps: early adopters of digital technology, supporters of offset printing technology, and creators of the combination of digital and offset printing technology. So, with the passage of time, what new markets or hot technologies in the printing industry that deserve attention are emerging? Let's take inventory one by one.

Variable and controllable white ink technology

Printing white text or patterns on a dark background has never been a simple matter. Fortunately, there is the "white ink" technology. This is a product developed by Hewlett-Packard for its Indigo digital printing machine. Its opacity is mainly determined by the number of ink drops ejected from it. The more white ink droplets the printer uses, the more opaque the text or patterns it prints. Although its price is more expensive, it can bring better visual effects to users.

In the digital printing process, the device can control the printing effect by adjusting the number of drops of ink ejection in the process of one paper feed. In the offset printing process, in order to obtain the same printing effect, the user must print the same substrate at least 5 times. Although the appearance of "white ink" technology provides a cheaper solution for white hot stamping, silk printing or thermal transfer printing of plastics, it is still slightly inferior to manual processing in terms of texture and feel. In short, the biggest feature of this technology is that it can print different visual effects by controlling the number of ink drops ejected by the printer, especially on various color substrates.

For designers, the "white ink" technology brings unlimited possibilities. It can make printing labels and packaging on transparent materials a reality. For production executives, it is now possible to abandon the previous practice of printing with dark ink on white paper, and then leaving the text or image area to be rendered blank. Nonetheless, printing text or image elements with white ink still faces many challenges, such as registration problems. Whether it is on digital presses or offset presses, no satisfactory solution has been found.

Nanoprinting technology to fill the gap

Nanoprinting technology, invented by the father of digital printing, Banny Landa, has been placed high on the market gap between offset and digital printing since its birth. The way it works is this: first inject the Landa nano ink into the print head, which is an aqueous ink containing nano-scale pigment particles. When printing, the ink is first transferred to a heated blanket, and then transferred to the substrate. The compatible substrates include standard coated paper or non-coated paper without special treatment, plastic packaging film or label. Paper etc.

The biggest advantage of nano-printing technology is its ultra-small ink particles. After reaching the nanometer size, the characteristics of many materials will change. The performance of nano inks in this regard is very good. Due to its hard texture, this ink is extremely resistant to abrasion and scratches. Nano ink can absorb more light, so it can provide a wider CMYK color gamut (15% higher than offset printing). In addition, the tiny pigment particles can make the ink film more uniform and the image clearer.

Once the nano ink is transferred to the heated blanket, the moisture contained in it will evaporate and leave an ultra-thin ink film. So people don't have to wait for the ink film to dry-which is common in offset and digital printing processes-and can go directly to the next production step. In addition, nano printing also allows users to print more colors in the printing area without oversaturation. Nano ink can print up to 8 colors with a resolution between 600 dpi and 1200 dpi. The speed on sheet and web printers can reach 13,000 pages / hour and 200 meters / minute, respectively.

The first nano-printing machine exhibited by Benny Lunda at the 2012 Drupa exhibition caused strong repercussions in the industry. But so far, no company has purchased or used this device.

3D printing technology of magical creation

3D printing is also called "additive manufacturing", which is a method of manufacturing solid parts by accumulating materials based on a three-dimensional data model. It is usually made of plastic, metal and other materials layer by layer. Its production process is to use software to make a 3D perspective view of an item, and then send it to a 3D printer for layering, and finally use a laser and other printers to solidify the material layer by layer.

With the continuous improvement of technical level, 3D printing will bring infinite possibilities to many fields. For example, in the field of medicine, this technology can prolong human life by producing artificial hearts and lungs; in the field of architecture, students can use this technology to watch and study their own design effects. In addition, parents can also entertain themselves by making books into toys or other props.

The biggest obstacle currently facing 3D printing technology is the lack of people's imagination and the high cost of 3D printing. It is gratifying that the prices of 3D printing consumables and equipment are continually falling, especially when some large-scale suppliers are fiercely competing for greater market share. Recently, Microsoft announced that it will make printing 3D objects on ordinary computers as easy as writing documents in Word and sending them to a printer for printing. The company's latest updated Windows 8.1 system adds a support module for 3D printing files. In short, we will soon see affordable desktop 3D printers, just like we had experienced when the desktop publishing system first appeared.

Environmentally friendly and healthy bioplastic technology

Biodegradable packaging is not a new concept. With the growth of people's environmental awareness, the development and production of environmentally friendly packaging by printing companies is also increasing. Although the word plastic always leads to the idea of "not environmentally friendly", bioplastics are completely different. This plastic is mainly made of vegetable fats, vegetable oils or vegetable starches, so it degrades quickly and does not need to go through the traditional recycling process to avoid the generation of some pollutants or by-products. This means that bioplastics are cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly than ordinary plastics.

Of course, there are some "bioplastics" that are not biodegradable on the market, and there is a certain proportion of PET in it. Many bottled soft drink companies, including Coca-Cola, are developing green polyethylene materials. Because the price of oil is constantly increasing, we must look for healthier and cheaper alternative materials.

However, since the raw materials of bioplastics are extracted from crops, we must also consider the impact of fertilizers and pesticides on the environment. At the same time, the exploration of innovative environmentally friendly plastics has not stopped. A 16-year-old student in Turkey, Birkin, used banana peels rich in cellulose and starch to produce a bioplastic and received a total value of 50,000 US dollars from the popular science magazine "Scientific Person" "Scientific Practice Award".

So the next time you see a blister pack or plastic container, it is likely that you will see bioplastics produced from waste in the kitchen.
