IKEA "painted" plastic bottles on the cabinets

Recently, IKEA and the Swedish design company Form Us With Love (hereinafter referred to as "FUWL") have jointly launched the first 100% recycled cabinet series Kungsbacka.

The basic structure of Kungsbacka is built from recycled industrial wood and coated again with a coating made of PET plastic bottles. According to reports, every 25 plastic bottles with a capacity of 500 ml can meet the coating requirements of 40cm*80cm.

Although environmental protection is important, as consumers demand quality of life, if Kungsbacka wants to succeed in the market, it must meet two conditions—beautiful design and reasonable cost. This is the key problem that the design team needs to solve in the R&D process.

In color tone, the design team chose a matt carbon black which is more resistant to look and texture, and treated the corners of cabinets softer, adding a “human touch”. Moreover, the series continues the modular nature of IKEA products and allows them to flexibly adapt to the needs of different kitchen spaces.

We hope that it can be as fit and practical as a black T-shirt, and still people want to cherish it.

When referring to recycled materials, many people think of keywords that may be "cheap", but the fact is exactly the opposite. In many cases, the cost of processing recycled materials is often higher than the cost of purchasing new materials.

As a result, FUWL, Italian material supplier 3B and IKEA Tripartite spent more on material research and development when designing products, ultimately succeeding in reducing production costs, and guaranteeing a product life cycle of up to 25 years. In February this year, IKEA bought a 15% minority stake in a Dutch plastics recycling company called Morssinkhof Rymoplast Group. This investment funding comes from the 1 billion euro special fund set up by IKEA for the development of sustainability.

Over the past 20 years, IKEA has spent a total of €1.5 billion on renewable energy and has projects around the world. IKEA UK also achieved "zero waste landfill" in 2016.
