At the end of this year, after meeting a series of requirements set out in the voluntary partnership agreement signed with the European Union more than a decade ago, Ghana is about to make history and become the first country in Africa to obtain timber licenses for export to the European market.

Currently, the EU is in the process of finalizing the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) license to Ghana to ensure that timber and timber products are exported to the EU in compliance with regulatory standards.

Mr. John Allotey, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Forestry Commission (FC), disclosed the news on the 27th. He said that Ghana will be the second country in the world to obtain an EU license after Indonesia. The Forestry Commission will focus its current work on the management structure of the department, streamlining the law, and strengthening the participation of local communities and civil society organizations.

He pledges that Ghana, as the first country in Africa and the second in the world to meet the requirements of the voluntary partnership agreement with the European Union, will continue to work hard to achieve this feat at an early date.

Ghana’s permission to start exporting timber products to the EU means that Ghana must comply with all protocols to ensure that timber is exported on a sustainable basis and within the law, while protecting the integrity of forest resources.
