Desktop multimedia

Powerful Macs and cheap video cards provide visionary businessmen a great opportunity to enter the video world.

Desktop Imaging Getting Started

Have you ever thought of adding QuickTime movies to your web pages? Have you ever thought of adding something more tempting than a PowerPoint slide in your company’s product demo? This requires the use of imaging technology. But what you know about video is probably limited to taking pictures with your camera in your backyard. You have never thought of using your Mac to edit and process video. Perhaps it is because Can not determine what software and equipment to use, or how much money to spend it.

Now tell you the good news: Apple computers for general office use video processing capabilities. The software and hardware based on QuickTime technology make the Mac the best video playback platform. On the other hand, how to allow us to equip computers at the lowest possible cost and achieve the best results is not a simple matter. It must be brainstorming. This article gives you guidance on how to equip a Mac-based video capture and editing system to make your work as attractive as a Hollywood movie.

Whether you plan to use an existing machine or add a new one, to use a computer for video editing, the following conditions are indispensable. You must have: In addition to a good computer, you also need to implement video capture and compression hardware, a high-speed storage device and some related editing software.

computer:
The main task of a Mac-based video processing system is to capture video images into a computer where the images are edited and processed, and finally a formed movie or presentation movie is output. This work of capturing video footage from video tapes into computers is called digitizing. Some Apple models can directly perform the collection work, while other models need to rely on NuBus or PCI video capture cards to complete this task.

The Power Mac 7500 and Power Mac 8500 are two of the hottest models sold in the Apple lineup. They have video capture cards on their motherboards, and they can perform image capture processing in a single machine. It also supports the selection of video input ports, such as composite, S-Video and RCA format video input, can perform video capture of 320×240 pixel images and capture 25~30 frames per second. The Power Mac 8500 also has a video output capability that allows the edited script to be output directly to the TV for playback, or saved to a video tape. Some AV series of Macs, including the Quarada 840AV and Power Mac 8100AV series that have stopped production, can capture about 30 images of 160×120 pixels per second.

The PowerTower AV system from Power Computing is another stand-alone video capture system. Rather than integrating the video capture device directly into the main board of the machine, it is equipped with a MirroMotion DC20 video card from Miro to complete the 640x480 full-screen image capture at 30 frames per second. It supports the VHS and S-Video formats and allows both the input and output of the above two formats. The machine is also equipped with a high-speed hard disk and a short version of Adobe Premiere video editing software. The entire system costs about $4,000.

If you only want to retrofit existing equipment, your machine must have an idle Nubus or PCI expansion slot and at least 16M of RAM. This amount of memory can only make do, but to really do video editing work, the machine does not have more than 32M RAM.

To re-equip a new set of equipment, it's still the old rule: Try to buy a high-performance CPU. To make the machine really work well in video editing, the computer must be a Power PC 604 or more, or at least an Apple compatible that is equivalent to the Power PC 604 microprocessor. The machine must have at least three expansion slots, one for the Disk-Arry and the other two for the video card.

Video capture card

Unless you buy an AV series machine with its own video processing device, the next step is to add a suitable video card to your machine. There are three types of video cards compatible with Macs: QuickTime, Propriety, and Data Translation Media 100.

Propriety video cards are expensive. Before that, because the QuickTime card couldn't guarantee the stable synchronization of video and audio, and the playback speed was not good, professional editors usually configured Propriety video cards. It's not the same now. Most Apple users choose the QuickTime card. Because its quality has been improved, it is comparable to Propriety, and the price is only a fraction of it. Whether it is a professional or an average user, you can find the right QuickTime video card with the highest performance-cost ratio according to your needs. All of these cards support the processing of movies, animations, or other rendering effects based on QuickTime technology.

Now you can buy a QuickTime card with a good screenshot effect with very little money. If you spend more money, the selected video card can achieve first-class level. How exactly is a video card good or bad? Mainly from the data transmission performance of the card, video format support and process design, etc. When video capture is performed on the video card, data compression must be used to complete the transmission of huge amounts of data (a native image is 27 megabytes per second). The compression ratio is determined by the data transmission performance of the video card. The better the data transmission performance, the greater the amount of transmission, the smaller the compression ratio, and the clearer the picture. High-quality video using the S-VHS and Hi-8 formats requires the card's data transfer rate to be more than 3 Mbytes per second. In fact, less than 5 megabytes per second is not enough for professional image processing. The data transfer capacity of the Miro DC20 video capture card in the Comparator AV machine can reach 3.5MB per second. If only a simple webpage production or video presentation is performed, this speed can still meet the requirements.

In addition to the data compression and data transfer features mentioned above, video format support for video cards is also an important measure. The video card must be able to support video or photographic film (picture). Most video cards support the Composite-Video and S-Video formats, which is enough for general multimedia production. But to meet the requirements of Component Video, this level of video card is not enough. Component Video requires red, green, and blue (RGB three-color) inputs, which are only available on advanced video cards for professional video cameras and cameras. No matter what video card you use, remember that they must support your camera and camera. Advanced video cards are generally equipped with an output box for external video input. This will prevent excessive cables from loosening the motherboard and affecting the connection between the motherboard and the computer.

The video card must have the relevant software in order to become a system. Most video cards use Adobe Premier Lite software. In the Mac video editing software, Adobe Premier occupies a dominant position. It complies with the existing plug-and-play industrial standards and supports various filtering and effect rendering functions developed by third parties. The software can do headline and theme design work (such as text animation, etc.), and can also generate various dynamic windows based on the user's requirements. Including alpha-channel images or the entire screen complex rotation, scrolling, moving and other functions. Like QuarkXpress and Adobe PageMaker, which we use in print layout editing, Premier also adds a paste version to video processing. In the pasted version, you can splicate, rearrange, and add special effects to the movie, and finally create a complete movie. Video editing relies on the time factor to unite all aspects. Therefore, unlike the paste version in typography, video editing is dynamic. It has a time axis. The captured video clips are arranged chronologically in a pasted version and the final imaging output. Just like our desktop publishing tools, video editing software can also incorporate a wide variety of digital multimedia works into the production of movies, from static images to animations, from sounds to special effects processing.

Mass storage device:
In the production of the film, the most often overlooked issue is storage. Our image capture, save, video playback, etc. are inseparable from the hard disk or other forms of storage media. Data transmission performance has once again become an important measure of our selection of equipment. Sustained Throughput refers to the ability of the drive to continuously transmit data. Many manufacturers have produced storage devices specifically for video technology, which are said to be several times faster than typical hard drives configured on Macs. High-speed transmission is advantageous, and general video card vendors require that the transmission speed of the hard disk should not be lower than the transmission speed of the card. On the other hand, if a very high-speed hard disk is used in a machine with only 3.5MB video cards per second, it will also destroy the entire system. The manufacturer of the MiroMotion DC20 video card recommends that the data transfer rate of the driver (or disk optimization manager) should be 0.5 times higher than that of the video card, which is more appropriate.

One way to judge whether a disk drive's continuous transmission capability can meet desktop video editing requirements is to conduct actual tests. Prepare your computer and Adobe Premier software to capture an image on your disk. Look through the Premier to see how the frame was leaked. If it is found that there is a missed frame, the interception speed is lowered; if it is not, it is gradually increased until it starts to appear as an image-failure phenomenon. When the maximum speed limit of the machine is found, the quality of the image is confirmed by the video playback. If there is no problem, this speed is the speed of the data transmission of the drive.

Video scripts consume a lot of storage space. The higher the data transmission capability, the smaller the compression ratio and the larger the storage space required for the image. A drive with a sustained data transfer rate of 3 MB per second requires 180 megabytes of space to store one minute of footage. With the reduction in the price of hard drives, it is worthwhile to spend money on several large hard drives.

For composite video format movies, because the format requires a data transfer volume of 5 MB per second, Disk-Arry must be configured for editing. The Disk Optimization Manager can distribute data streams across two or more disk media, effectively speeding up image acquisition and storage. The disk manager is a PCI card, so a free PCI slot must be left in the machine so that the manager can perform data offloading. After the data splitting mode is adopted, the continuous transmission capacity of the storage device can reach 40 Mbytes per second, which is much higher than the speed of the video card. At present, large-capacity video storage has a tendency to use non-fixed memory. However, removable storage and Jaz Disk Manager are still very expensive and generally only used for backup.

Light, shadow, QuickTime!
As in the page design, audio, color printing industry, Apple is also leading the new trend of desktop video technology. It provides us with a wealth of image processing products. Although so many products make people feel a bit confused, but when we finally produce a satisfactory work, it will feel that everything is worth it. Let us be confident to meet the challenge.

Smaller movie/compression technology

Before you can play a movie on a Mac or online, you must compress the data. This is a fact that must be faced. No MAC or Internet can play uncompressed video clearly. How much compression? How to compress? The larger the compression ratio, the less clear the image. You must choose the best balance between the playback speed and clarity of the media. Adobe Premiere 4.0 can help you optimize the playback of videos based on the speed of CD-ROM transfer, but it is more difficult to operate.

Terran Interactive's MovieCleaner Pro can provide you with an optimized compression scheme based on the interaction with the user. The issues involved are: compression ratio and image quality, audio and video, smoothness and clarity, etc. You have to choose between them. MovieCleaner Pro also has learning function that can be used as usual
