3D printing and space exploration seem to have a natural connection. Aerospace agencies around the world see 3D as a way to reduce the cost of space transportation. After all, transporting a small amount of 3D printed base material costs far less than the finished product. According to 3D printing online, the cost of space transportation is 10,000 US dollars per pound, so a big project like the Mars program is unimaginable. Recently, a group of Danish college students seem to have given a solution, they proposed a 3D printing solution called "CosmoCrops project". The project involved space 3D printing and all of the printing materials were produced by a dedicated space co-cultivation system.
Although this project is still far away from the real realization, its concept is very novel. Kai Finster, a professor of biology at Aarhus University in Denmark, explained that bacteria are the key to this project. As long as the genetic programming is reasonable, this single-celled organism can produce all the basic elements that people need. For example, algae microbes can be genetically programmed to absorb sunlight and produce sugars; while Bacillus subtilis can break down sugars and further produce everything humans need, including plastics, vitamins, minerals and food. Of course, these materials can be further processed into the required basic equipment by 3D printing technology.
In theory, this project is very suitable for space exploration because it requires very little equipment. The University's website says that research and development of microorganisms that absorb sunlight more efficiently will increase the sustainability of the project and the type of material produced. It is ideal for the Moon or Mars base.
According to the understanding of 3D printing online, they have begun to establish similar co-cultivation systems on the earth. But there is no doubt that this system is more practical in space. Students hope that this co-cultivation system will be built next month. The goal is to develop bacteria that can survive in the space environment in 2018. There is no doubt that it takes a long time to develop multifunctional bacteria that can produce fat, protein and other substances. But the attitude of the students is very optimistic: "As long as you know the recipes and synthetic methods that allow these bacteria to produce specific chemicals, you can produce food, medicine and everything you want."
Of course, even if all goes well, students will face the problem of sunshine on Mars, because the intensity of sunlight on Mars is lower than that of the Earth. Despite the enormous challenges, the concept of CosmoCrops can definitely make a huge contribution to space exploration.
