Four major factors restrict the further development of China's furniture industry

According to customs statistics, from January to July this year, Jiangxi Province exported furniture and its parts (hereinafter referred to as "furniture") of 290 million US dollars, an increase of 75.7% over the same period last year (the same below).

First, the main features of furniture exports in Jiangxi Province from January to July this year

(1) The monthly export scale remained stable and the export growth rate slowed down. Since the beginning of this year, the monthly export value of furniture in Jiangxi Province has remained stable. Except for the low export value in February, the rest of the month has fluctuated slightly between US$35 million and US$55 million. In July, the export volume was US$43.1 million, a year-on-year increase of 50.9%. However, the cumulative export growth rate has slowed down, and the export growth rate in the first seven months fell by 47.9 percentage points from the first quarter.

(2) Exports accounted for 80% of the general trade. From January to July this year, Jiangxi Province exported furniture of 230 million US dollars by general trade, an increase of 63.7%, accounting for 80.1% of the total furniture export value of the province in the same period; exports of 46.64 million US dollars by tourism and shopping, an increase of 2 times, accounting for 16.3% Exports by processing trade amounted to 10.47 million US dollars, an increase of 39%.

(3) The export of private enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises is the mainstay. From January to July this year , private enterprises in Jiangxi Province exported furniture of 180 million US dollars, an increase of 73.1%, accounting for 64.2% of the total furniture export value of the province in the same period; foreign-invested enterprises exported 94.68 million US dollars, an increase of 92.5%, accounting for 33.1%.

(4) The export to ASEAN and the United States increased slightly, and the export to the EU doubled. From January to July this year, Jiangxi Province exported 57.72 million US dollars of furniture to ASEAN, an increase of 8.4%; exports to the United States reached 50.51 million US dollars, an increase of 3.2%; exports to the EU reached 40.7 million US dollars, an increase of 1.7 times; the total exports to the above three accounted for the same period The total value of furniture exports in the province was 52.1%. During the same period, exports to the Latin American and African markets were $24.8 million and $23.49 million, respectively, an increase of 5.9 and 2.1 times.

Second, the current issue of furniture export in Jiangxi Province is worthy of attention

(1) The US-European debt crisis continued to spread, and external economic uncertainty increased furniture export variables. At the beginning of August, the international financial market experienced rapid turmoil, and the short-term economic operations of the three major economies of the United States, Europe and Japan were not very optimistic. The report released by the US Department of Commerce showed that the US economic situation was lower than expected in the first half of the year, and the current recession was deeper. At the same time, Europe was in deep debt crisis, and Japan experienced negative GDP growth for two consecutive quarters. The United States and the European Union are the main markets for furniture exports in China. In 2010, the export value accounted for 53.9% of the total value of furniture exports. The economic situation in the United States and Europe is uncertain, and the negative impact on China's furniture exports cannot be ignored.

(2) The cost of soaring corporate profits is compressed. First, the prices of raw materials such as wood have risen sharply. With the increase of the global protection of the ecological environment, the major log exporting countries have cut the amount of timber exports. The domestic large and small Xing'anling ecological function zones have also stopped logging, which has greatly reduced the supply of logs and pushed the prices to soar. This year, ordinary wood Prices have risen by as much as 20%. Second, the appreciation of the renminbi against the US dollar has accelerated, and corporate profits have been “evaporated”. On August 12, the central parity of the US dollar exchange rate was 6.3972, breaking through the 6.4 mark and hitting a new high since the exchange rate reform. Third, “difficulties in recruiting workers” and “labor shortages” have pushed labor costs up sharply. According to the company, the talent problem is also a big problem that plagues the enterprise. The skilled workers are very difficult to recruit, so the wage cost is greatly improved. At present, the average wage of the ladders in the coastal areas is at least 3,000 yuan, and a quota of 2,800 yuan must be set, otherwise no one can be recruited.

(3) Trade barriers stand up and raise the threshold for exports. In recent years, the technical barriers in China's traditional furniture market have been continuously upgraded: in April 2009, the United States announced the "Chinese wooden handicrafts to the United States quarantine requirements", stipulates that China's bamboo and wood products must be fumigation or heat treatment and issued a phytosanitary certificate, posted Traceability Mark; In April 2010, the US Lacey Act amendment required the legal source of timber to be provided every time a forest product was imported. The US Standard for Compound Wood Products Formaldehyde came into effect on January 3, 2011. From July 1st, the formaldehyde limit standard was greatly increased [4]. At the same time, the EU's Country of Origin Labeling Law will also take effect on March 3, 2013. The new regulations require wood products imported into the EU market to obtain an “FSC certificate”, which means that the wood purchased by the manufacturer is produced from a legally developed forest. The export threshold is constantly rising, making furniture exports more and more difficult.

(4) Re-manufacturing, light design, light brand, and reduced export competitiveness. In 2010, a total of 282 enterprises in Jiangxi Province had furniture export records, and only two production enterprises of more than 10 million US dollars were private enterprises in Longnan County, and most of them were small enterprises with export value below one million US dollars. At present, the products of Jiangxi furniture export enterprises are highly homogenized, lacking original design, and less investment in brand development. Most enterprises stay in the low-end market for low-price competition. Under the influence of rising costs, appreciation of the renminbi, and upstream real estate regulation and control policies, its competitiveness has been continuously weakened.

Third, for this recommendation

First, vigorously explore emerging markets, appropriately increase the proportion of domestic sales, and diversify the concentration of risks in the export market; second, strengthen daily monitoring and early warning and industry normative guidance, increase research and early warning on changes in foreign trade barriers, and help enterprises understand and respond to foreign countries in a timely manner. Trade barriers; Third, accelerate the transformation and upgrading of the furniture manufacturing industry, increase the research and development of independent brands, continuously improve product quality, improve product technology and improve the core competitiveness of enterprises.
