SIC Combibloc has made impressive achievements in the last three years.
Since the first filling machine was installed in Asia in 1983, SIG Combibloc has installed approximately 150 aseptic filling equipment in Asia throughout Thailand, China, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Taiwan Province of China.
According to Peter O. Herning, chief executive officer of SIC Combibloc Limited, annual consumption and aseptic cartons in Asian regions (excluding Japan) range from 8 billion to 9 billion, of which more than 60% are concentrated in the above countries and area.
Herning revealed that SIC Combibloc in Taiwan has become a major competitor in the market with a 30% market share. He said: "Taiwan is the best operating market for Combibloc, and sales account for about 50% of total sales in Asia."
In the past ten years, Taiwan's aseptic carton packaging has made considerable progress. Nowadays, the region can be said to be the world’s largest per capita consumption of aseptic carton beverages, with tea beverages being the most popular product, followed by the perspiration drink. However, with the development of the dairy market, the market for tea beverages is now stagnating. Soymilk drinks are popular, but the market share of soymilk in aseptic carton packs remains low.
In contrast to Taiwan, Thailand's aseptic carton market is dominated by milk, dairy products and soy milk. Although Herning expects dairy products to remain the industry with the largest volume of aseptic cartons, he also noticed that the dairy market is stagnating and is very price sensitive. On the contrary, the juice industry will see significant growth, but its high retail prices will inhibit growth to some extent. This is partly due to excessive consumption taxes and tariffs.
Herning, on the other hand, sees a bright future for the soy beverage market. At the same time, new products such as tea beverages and coffee have emerged, which provide a huge market potential for aseptic packaging.
In the long run, Herning believes that China will eventually occupy the "leading position" status of Asian aseptic carton packs. He insisted: "The market share of aseptic carton is still very small, but as the purchasing power of consumers increases and the sales channels improve, as an alternative to glass bottles and three-piece cans, the aseptic carton market still has a huge Expansion capacity."
He went on to say that the UHT market, in particular, has enormous potential for aseptic packaging. With the establishment of two service centers in Shanghai and Beijing, the business of SIC Combibloc in China this year is expected to increase by three digits.
